MPI intake by Brazilian mini-mills hit 5-year high in 2018: Iron Metallics Market Analysis

Installed MPI capacity in Minas Gerais recovered further (to 5.50 million tonnes per year), but utilization rates were negatively affected by production disruptions amid the truck drivers’ strike in May 2018.

Brazilian mini-mills have increased pig iron share in their steelmaking mix further in 2018. Sindifer, the union of independent merchant pig iron producers in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil’s major merchant pig iron (MPI) producing and exporting region, has published its yearbook for 2018. The released data confirmed our estimations that local electric-arc furnaces (EAFs) increased pig iron intake in their steelmaking mix last year, which along with higher steel output supported demand for iron metallics, as well as encouraged Brazilian suppliers to strengthen their focus on domestic sales.
