European prices fall, weak local demand to blame: European Market Highlights


So what explains this ongoing malaise that has seen European prices lag behind those elsewhere during 2019?

While prices elsewhere continue their recent upward movements, European steel prices have lurched downward this month. With regards hot-dipped galvanized material (HDG), coil is now priced at an average of some €580/tonne ex-works (coating extras excluded). This is down by €15/tonne since mid-March and contrasts with price increases equivalent to some €10-20/tonne across Asia and in the US market (see our sections on the Americas and Asia for more details).

So what explains this ongoing malaise that has seen European prices lag behind those elsewhere during 2019?
