US flat steel prices continued to weaken through January: Latest Analysis

Trying to turn the situation around, at the end of January US strip-mill producers announced a $40 per ton hike to their coil prices.

This month’s key North American steel forecast highlights:

US flat steel prices continued to weaken through January, making it the sixth consecutive month of declines in coil prices as producers had to continuously drop their offers to secure sales amidst a ‘‘buyers’ strike’’. As a result, HRC prices fell by 6.3% month on month, and CRC and HDG prices by 4.2% and 4.1% respectively. Cut-to-length plate prices also declined in January, but only by 1.3%, bringing the already elevated differential between cut-to-length plate and HRC prices to $290 per ton. Trying...
