Brazil MPI exports failed to exceed the 2mt-mark last year: South America Market Analysis

Back in April last year, market participants claimed pig iron exports from Brazil could exceed 3 million tonnes for 2018.

Export volumes of merchant pig iron (MPI) from Brazil dropped by 16% in 2018 to 1.91 million tonnes. This was the lowest volume in the past 10 years, as the first chart alongside illustrates: 2018 saw the volumes drop below 2 million tonnes for the first time in the post-crisis period after pig iron exports out of Brazil halved in 2009.
