Weak demand for steel to continue in Canada and Mexico: Mexico and Canada Highlights


In Mexico, crude steel output fell by 9.3% on the year to 18.5 million tonnes in 2019, according to Mexican steel association Canacero.

Canadian crude steel production fell to 12.8 million tonnes in 2019, down by 4.9% on the year, amid weak demand particularly in eastern Canada. In the automotive sector, largely based in the eastern Canadian province of Ontario, output was estimated to be down by 4.1% on the year in the fourth quarter of 2019 and by 5.6% across the whole year, according to Oxford Economics. But there was a slight divergence in the west in recent months, with the western Canadian oil sector predominantly based in Alberta, but also in Saskatchewan, and British Columbia, seeing the oil rig operating count growth rate move to a slight year on year increase from late December onwards, having been at a negative for much of 2019, according...
