Indian mills’ rebar margins pressured in 2019 amid deceleration in construction: International Long Product Market Analysis


Margins of Indian rebar producers were pressured in 2019 as bar and rod stocks rose significantly above 2018 levels because of a deceleration in the construction sector.

The Indian domestic rebar price started 2020 strongly at 34,700 rupees ($484) per tonne ex-works as assessed by Fastmarkets on January 3 following a difficult year for producers, but prices have since softened marginally. Across 2019 the Indian domestic rebar price averaged 32,806 rupees per tonne, down from 37,342 rupees in the prior year (12.1% fall), and it dropped to a two-year low in early August. Similar price slumps were also seen in other rebar markets, with the Turkish export and the Singapore import rebar prices falling on an average yearly basis by 15.7%...
