Long product prices follow scrap upwards: US Long Product Highlights


Not only has Dodge Data & Analytics’ monthly nonresidential building Momentum Index increased 1.5% month on month in December, including a 2.3% rise in institutional construction and a 0.9% increase in commercial construction, but the American Institute of Architects’ Architecture Billings Index, which had been fluctuating between contraction and expansion for much of 2019, increased modestly for the second month in a row in November to 51.9 points.

US long product prices have seen across-the-board price increases over the past month, in line with our expectations. The price increases are unsurprising given three consecutive monthly scrap price rises and with forward-looking market indicators turning more positive even though this time of the year is traditionally somewhat slower for construction activity.
