Demand Analysis:China's retail sales of passenger cars dropped 3.4% y-o-y in December According to the latest data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), December retail sales of passenger vehicles in China dropped 3.4% y-o-y to 2.14 million units. On an m-o-m basis, retail sales of sedans, multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs), sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and minivans rose 11.1% in December from November levels, a better m-o-m growth rate than the 5.1% witnessed in November. For the whole year, total retail sales of passenger cars in China came in at 20.69 million units, down 7.4% from 2018's level. Historically there has been a recovery in passenger car sales before Chinese Lunar New Year, but this year there has been no such performance, and we believe the reason is that other expenses have been trending higher this year, leaving customers less interested in buying vehicles.
