The strike by the members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union at General Motors (GM) plants across North America, discussed in the previous issue, ended at the end of October. The nearly six-weeks action halted activity at a number of facilities across the region, with plant closures in Canada and Mexico. In a new deal, GM and UAW agreed that the company can proceed with plans to close three plants in the US, but union’s demands to shift some of production from Mexico to the US were refused. In November last year, GM announced plans to close up to five factories in the US and Canada, but with this agreement Canadian operations look to be unaffected.
