US HDG starts to move up, supported by back-to-back mill price hikes: American Market Highlights


To date, spot base prices of $710-730/ton have already been achieved, with expectations that within the next month or so they could go up another $20-$30/ton and that by the end of the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter base prices could move up to about $800/ton, which, while not quite back to April’s $820-$840/ton peak is up nearly 18% from mid-June’s lows.

US HDG prices have begun their journey on the road to gradual recovery
Helped by two mill price hike announcements in as many weeks, the US HDG sheet market has not only achieved what had appeared to be a very elusive price floor but has already started to achieve gradual price recovery. Slightly before Nucor led the first $40/ton sheet price hike on June 27, US HDG prices bottomed out at a $680/ton spot base price. By the beginning of July they had inched up very slightly to about $700/ton and, especially after the second $40/ton increase, also led by Nucor, HDG sheet prices continue to inch up.
