Demand for met coal imports in China sensitive to iron ore procurement strategies: Coking Coal and Coke Market Analysis


Despite scrap-based steelmaking being viewed as environment-friendly, there are a number of limitations and challenges to it.

Fastmarkets’ research team attended the 25th Coaltrans Asia conference in Bali, Indonesia, last week to deliver a presentation on the metallurgical coal market in Asia. The presentation focused on interconnections between coking coal, iron ore and ferrous scrap markets. We argued that the increasing consumption of scrap and a potential shift toward the electric-arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking route away from the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) route in China are medium- to long-term threats to demand for steelmaking raw materials, while in the near team coking coal import volumes will continue to be affected by iron ore procurement strategies.
