Prices fall but margins rise: Asian Market Highlights


Export prices, which peaked a week after our previous issue, have been undergoing the same trend though more modestly and at the time of writing had restored a small premium over our domestic benchmark; just over $10 per tonne FOB.

Though it took longer than we had anticipated, Chinese coated (HDG) prices have begun to fall back during the past month owing to negative sentiment, associated with the US-China trade war, and a strengthening dollar. Export and domestic market assessments fell by up to 4% ($30 per tonne excluding tax) since reaching a 2019 peak at the time of our last report in mid-April. Having reached a dollar equivalent of $630 per tonne excluding taxes in the Shanghai spot market, they have since lost roughly $30 per tonne in value. Unsurprisingly, the unusual premium they had achieved over our south European domestic market HDG price one month ago has now gone; not that the EU market is showing any great signs of strength (see Europe analysis for more details).
