Alcoa plans to increase its largest alumina refinery's capacity by 20%

Alcoa has announced plans to increase the nameplate capacity at its Pinjarra alumina refinery in Australia by almost 20%. In an application submitted by the company to Australia's Environmental Protection Authority, an approval to remove bottlenecks at the Pinjarra refinery was requested so that it can increase its capacity to 5 million tonnes per year, the maximum allowed under current environmental approvals. According to the minority owner Alumina Ltd, the refinery has a current capacity of 4.2 million tonnes per year but produced a total of 4.5 million tonnes in 2018. If the application is approved, construction is planned to start in the second quarter of 2020 and operations are expected to start in the final quarter of 2021.
