US long product prices may edge higher in Q2 2019: US Long Product Highlights


US rebar prices have been rising and are expected to go up further over the next few months, especially if, as some suspect, domestic mills put forth another price increase any time now on top of the successful hike that they announced in mid-February.

While there appears to be a bit more optimism in the US long products market than there had been about a month ago, sentiment continues to be very measured given that weather issues have resulted in several construction projects being put on hold. The resultant pent up demand, however, could be supportive for long product markets over the next few months, despite mixed messages from certain reports. Even though the Census Bureau reports that US construction spending was up 1.0% month-on-month and 1.1% year-on-year in February, the American Institute of Architects’ Architecture Billings Index softened to 50.3 points from 55.3...
