US HDG prices rise; further upward momentum seems likely: American Market Highlights

It always remains a concern that if domestic prices move up too quickly that it could attract more imports but, at least to date, that doesn’t appear to be an issue for the US HDG market.

Back to back mill price hikes boost US HDG prices

All expectations are that US mills will be able to get most, if not all, of the $80/short ton price increase that they have sought in two separate flat-rolled steel price hike announcements, especially if, as anticipated, they float the third price increase sometime before the end of April. Just over the past month US base HDG prices have jumped to $830-850/ton, up from $780-820/ton. Given that some have called galvanized steel the strongest US steel market and that import competition appears to be continuing to decline, we believe that prices could move up even further in the next few months. While we are uncertain, given the current gradual upward movement in zinc prices, whether mills will also increase their coating adders, we believe that, especially if the mills announce...
