Carbon Products: European tar availability remains tight


On average smelters will use 80-90kg of binder pitch in the production of 1 tonnes of aluminium, which means that there has not been a huge impact on overall smelter input costs as a result of these CTP prices increases.

Coal tar prices show no sign of retreating
Most smelters around the globe are now paying in the order of $900/tonne for delivered liquid pitch supplies. This is close to twice the average level of in Q4 16-Q1 17, although after the sharp increases noted on a quarterly basis during 2017, over the course of 2018 prices has been relatively stable.
