Coal price recovery threatens to squeeze cokers: Coking Coal and Coke Market Analysis
MB’s weekly price assessment for Chinese coking coal refers to a range of different coking coals, with the best quality material available on the spot market at an unusually high, though rapidly falling, premium over Australian PHCC.
As we expected, Australian coking coal exporters established a floor in the week before last, whether temporary or otherwise, and succeeded in raising prices last week by 2-5%. Unsurprisingly, the bigger hikes related to the premium hard coking coals (PHCC), which as detailed last week, had become competitive, when compared to higher quality China-origin coals.
