Australia’s exemption from US import duties should be bullish for Asia premium
Australia has joined Canada and Mexico as the countries so far exempt from Section 232 import taxes of 10% for aluminium and 25% for steel that the US will after Trump signed off on the tariffs on March 8. While the USA is not a traditional destination for Australian material, what we may witness is Australian producers divert production to the US from Asia should US aluminium premiums continue to rise, which means Asia could have a shortage of good western material. Australia is a major supplier of aluminium to Asia – it produced 1.518 million tonnes of primary aluminium in the fiscal year to the end of June 2017, with about 90% of the output exported, according to Australia’s department of industry, innovation and science.
