US HDG prices on the rise again: American Market Highlights


MBR believes that, given relatively lean service center inventories, fairly positive end-use demand and lower volumes of foreign steel, most if not all of that price hike will be collected in the coming weeks.

Last month it appeared as if US HDG spot base prices were going through a correction, slipping slightly during February, easing to $815-$820/short ton by mid- to late-February from the $820-$840/ton level seen at the beginning of the month. But that weakness was short-lived, with base prices moving back up to $840-$860/ton even before taking into account the $30/ton price hike led by Nucor and followed by most of the major sheet mills on the back of higher input costs, with scrap following iron ore prices up.
