Prices slip as construction activity slows: European Market Highlights

The improvement in capacity utilization levels has also been a response to improved demand, which again has helped to improve producers’ pricing power.

With prices slipping over the past month, European coated steel markets appear to be ending 2014 on a negative note. Average European prices of hot-dipped galvanized steel (HDG) are down by some €10/tonne since last month, to around €480/tonne as of writing. The main culprit is falling spot market demand, which has been slipping since mid-November as construction activity has gradually slowed with the advance of the winter months.

But this pricing malaise is not solely confined to the EU28 area. HDG prices in neighbouring Turkey and countries throughout the Middle East have also been slipping, for much the same reason of slowing demand growth on the spot market. HDG prices in Turkey are now at $730/tonne (0.5mm thickness), down by some $15/tonne since mid-November, while prepainted steel is being sold for $830/tonne (0.5mm thickness), down by around $20/tonne.
