Post-summer price momentum fades, reverses: European Market Highlights
The slight upward movement in prices seen last month has certainly not continued over recent weeks and has, if anything, started to go into reverse.
Despite a positive start to the fourth quarter, albeit only a very slightly positive start, Europes coated steels markets now look set to end the year much as they did in 2013 a brief post-summer uptick followed by stability, a slight retreat in prices, and hopes for something better in the New Year.
In more detail, we talk of the slight upward movement in prices seen last month. This momentum, such as it was, has certainly not continued over recent weeks and has, if anything, started to go into reverse. Average prices of hot-dipped galvanized material (HDG) in the EU are down slightly this month, from just over 500/tonne to levels of around 490/tonne, a drop of around 15/tonne. This has come about largely as a result of weakening prices in northern European markets. These in turn have come under pressure both from cheaper offers from producers...
