Prices weaken, particularly in southern Europe: European Market Highlights

The pricing gap between European countries has previously widened of course, before converging once more.

As we enter the middle of August the European steel market in general remains characterized by the slow market activity typical for this time of year. The situation is no different in Europe’s coated steels markets and, as per our report last month, the hopes of Europe’s steelmakers to push through sustained price increases appear increasingly unlikely to be realized. Indeed, recent weeks have only seen prices continue to weaken.

This has been particularly so in southern European markets, with prices discounted by a number of suppliers in order to secure bookings before summer maintenance closures. As a result, hot-dipped galvanized prices (HDG) have been as low as €455/tonne in the Italian market (down by €20/tonne since our previous report). Base prices in other countries are typically slightly higher, at some €490-505/tonne in Portugal and Spain, and up to €520/tonne in Germany and the Netherlands. ...
