HDG prices inch up on stronger than usual summertime demand: American Market Highlights

It is actually quite unusual to see mills raise base prices this time of the year.

While the threat of an import surge has prevented US HDG mills from formally announcing any further base price increases, they have been able to inch spot prices up to $790-$810/short ton from $770-$800/ton a month ago through quiet negotiations with their major customers. Metal Bulletin Research (MBR) believes that given across the board increases in end-use demand and expectations that a coated steel trade case is imminent – to be filed as early as Labor Day – that spot prices for September delivery could be as high as $800-$830/ton with even further increases possible in the fourth quarter unless expectations of a surge of lower priced imported steel dampens the mills’ enthusiasm.

Unlike their counterparts east of the Mississippi, West Coast mills USS-Posco and California Steel Industries made their price increases official, citing “changing market conditions” as their rationale for a $25/ton...
