Italian market prices suffering in particular: European Market Highlights

Behind the Italian price weakness are traditionally cited the weak market fundamentals in Italy, and the heavy import competition that Italy is subject to from suppliers outside of Europe.

Last month, we did not believe that there was much chance of us reporting on a successful €20/tonne price increase attempt by ArcelorMittal in June. And indeed, so far, our scepticism appears to have been warranted. Metal Bulletin Research (MBR) understands that prices for hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) material in some European markets have, in fact, slipped since our May report.

Average prices in both northern and southern European countries are down by about €10/tonne since our previous report and now sit at around €525/tonne and €495/tonne respectively. It is becoming increasingly too vague to talk about northern and southern Europe, however, with variations within these regions. This is something that we have highlighted previously.
