European producers continue to look for price increases: European Market Highlights

As detailed in our recent reports, and illustrated in a recent Metal Bulletin Research (MBR) webcast (see, demand certainly appears to be growing in Europe.

“We have not raised prices so far this year, despite original plans”. This quote, delivered by a spokesman for Italian steel producer Marcegaglia to our sister company Steel First during late February, succinctly sums up the situation in Europe’s galvanized steel market at present. Prices on a wide range of steel products in Europe, including hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) material, have not only remained stable during the early months of 2014, but since last October.

Having announced planned price increases for the post-summer period last year and, once that failed to gain traction, for the first quarter of this year, Europe’s major galvanized steel producers remain defiant. Prices are to increase during the second-quarter, the market is now being told, producers having failed to push through the €30-40/tonne increases sought since Q3 2013.
