Global galvanized prices in retreat, except for Europe: European Market Highlights

While cautious optimism is setting the tone in EU markets, however, it is the theme of caution that appears to be pervading one of Europe’s key neighbouring markets.

Compared to mid-October, galvanized steel prices are either flat or have fallen in most major markets of the world. Price increases toward the end of 2013 have now been reversed in the case of the USA as the market has come under increased pressure from import competition (see American market highlights), while a mixture of weak demand and fluctuating currencies have seen prices falter in both China and Turkey. In fact, it is only the European market in which average prices have risen during this period, following small signs over the past few weeks that European steelmakers are finally succeeding in achieving higher price levels.

Of course, the four-month timeframe mentioned above has been arbitrarily selected to place the European market in a good light but, even a broader view of recent trends shows that European patience is now being rewarded and that the previous divergence in prices between Europe...
