US HDG prices edge up despite possible Q2 import surge: American Market Highlights


We do not see the announcements by Nucor, ArcelorMittal USA and NLMK USA just before Christmas as yet another round of price increases.

US HDG base prices continued to strengthen slightly in the past month, supported by stronger-than-expected December order activity. We believe this strength was helped by pre-Christmas price hike announcements by several major domestic sheet producers, rising raw material costs and lean service centre inventories.

We do not see the announcements by Nucor, ArcelorMittal USA and NLMK USA just before Christmas as yet another round of price increases, but rather a move to bring their prices in line with US Steel, Severstal North America and AK Steel, who announced base price increases earlier in December. As a result, US HDG published base prices have increased slightly to $810-$820/short ton, although most deals continue to be conducted at $790-$795/short ton. There have, however, been some reports of sales at as high as $830-$840/short ton, but those were mainly to smaller distributors for more specialized coated steel...
