A floor is established for HDG sheet prices: American Market Highlights


Despite the steep asking price, several steelmakers have already expressed interest in ThyssenKrupp’s Calvert mill.

In what appears to be the sixth mini-pricing cycle since the steel market began to recover in 2009, US Steel has led a move, which has been followed by most of the major domestic mills, to increase all flat rolled sheet prices by $40/short ton. It is too early to tell if such a price increase can be successful, but it seems as if at the very least it has established a pricing floor at a HDG sheet base price of between $660-$690/short ton, where prices had fallen from the most recent peak of $750-$780/short ton in August. While it might take a while – and possibly a second round of price increases – to accomplish, we believe that even in the current lethargic business environment, the mills could raise their prices by $30-$40/short ton by late this year and perhaps even more in the first quarter. ...
