EU prices drop again: European Market Highlights

The EU’s falling substrate and competitive global pricing continue to impact domestic pricing levels.

As we forecast last month, EU markets continued to exhibit price weakness. Falling substrate and competitive global pricing maintain their effect domestic pricing levels, as mills cut pricing back sharply over the month. The combination is encouraging buyers to wait for even lower offers, which seems likely to come through over the next few weeks, albeit most of the declines are in place. For now in Italy, HDG base prices are even lower than cold rolled coil base prices at around €580-600/tonne ($821-906/tonne) EXW from Riva. It is selling 1mm Z140 material at around €630-640/tonneEXW. As well as the local market, it has also been aggressive at offering into the higher priced German and French markets. Here local mills are still seeking around €680/tonne ex-works for 1mm Z140 product, but will probably discount for larger orders.
