Mills seek to raise coated prices, again: American Market Highlights


US coated steel producers have announced a second round of price increases.

Despite continued overcapacity and a slowing in growth of both galvanised steel consumption and of the US economy in general, US flat-rolled steel mills, including US Steel, Nucor and Severstal North America, have announced a second round of price increases, which, if accepted, would raise prices for hot-rolled, cold-rolled, HDG, galvalume and electro-galvanised sheet an average of about another $40/ton ($44/tonne). This move is seen to be overridingly a cost related move, occurring on the back of rising scrap and other input prices.

Mills have expressed cautious optimism that they could get this price increase through. While there are some outcries that demand doesn’t support the increase, they are not be expressed with the same fervour as when steelmakers...
