Chinese exports increase: Asian Market Highlights


Export activity from Chinese mills has increased in the last month, as they remain the most competitively priced material in the Asian market. We understand Anshan sold around 30,000 tonnes for export this month, while Handan Steel sold around 20,000 tonnes

Export activity from Chinese mills has increased in the last month, as they remain the most competitively priced material in the Asian market. We understand Anshan sold around 30,000 tonnes for export this month, while Handan Steel sold around 20,000 tonnes. As the chart below highlights, export volumes have been picking up in the last couple of months, but remain well below previous peaks. As always however, the concern remains over the potential for China to disrupt the regional market because of the huge potential volumes available for export, and the aggressive pricing strategies.

Prices for export have in fact held over the last few weeks at around $660/tonne fob. This is equivalent to around $720-740/tonne cif to Middle Eastern, Latin American or European markets, where producers have picked up some sales. With HR coil being...
