Prices increase on last month: European Market Highlights


Mills are expected to attempt to increase prices further in the coming weeks, despite the fact that the recent upturn could be only a temporary surge due to a combination of the increases in demand mentioned above and the tightness in supply – European mills have been vigilant in restricting output in the second quarter:

European import offers have seen increases on last month, moving from €440–500/tonne to €490–540/tonne cfr EU port for September/October delivery. Domestic prices have also moved up by around €20/tonne, with ex-works base prices up to €480–500/tonne. Some base prices in Southern Europe however remain below trend; In Italy, Riva’s ex-works base price for HDG is at €440/tonne and in Portugal Lusosider’s stand at €450/tonne. We understand that enquiries have picked up in the region, driven in part by restocking activities and also due to an improvement in key end-use sectors such as automotive manufacturing and construction.
