Coated prices sink again: American Market Highlights

A market balance in coated steels, or flat products for that matter, has yet to be reached and prices will reflect that imbalance for as long as supply outweighs demand

US end-user demand for steel flat products continued to slide through March, despite some heartening signs from recent economic indicators. The mood among market players is that a recovery is a long way off and the best defence is to wait out the downturn and make sales where possible.

Whatever sales have been made are far lower than that recorded one month ago or even earlier in March. We are now seeing HDG priced on the domestic market for around $620/ton ($683/tonne) for 1mm thick material with a G90 coating. Service centres tell us though that pricing has been very fluid and tends to be based on individual cases as suppliers compete for any business available at much smaller tonnages than has been sold in the past. Mills, distributors and service centres all have tonnage to sell and are intent on making deals.
