As demand for coated steel from the industry's key consuming sectors remains weak, coated prices are under pressure again this month.

As demand for coated steel from the industry’s key consuming sectors remains weak, coated prices are under pressure again this month. Domestic mills have cut back production dramatically both in an attempt to halt the rapid decline in prices, but also to try to keep supply in line with collapsing demand. Demand from the car industry worsens on a monthly basis, while the troubles of the housing sector are far from over, dampening demand for coated steels in both the building and appliance industries. Domestic HDG prices are around $660–700/ton ($728–770/tonne).

Reflecting both the absence of demand, as well as the risks associated with the longer lead times of imports, there is little interest in importing at present. Chinese HDG export offers remain...
