Coated steel prices cease to increase: American Market Highlights


The series of monthly increases that led US HDG prices to rise from around $900/tonne at the start of 2008 to roughly about $1,450/tonne in May appears to have lost momentum as we head into summer.

The series of monthly increases that led US HDG prices to rise from around $900/tonne at the start of 2008 to roughly about $1,450/tonne in May appears to have lost momentum as we head into summer. Nucor’s announcement of a $30/ton ($33/tonne) increase on August shipments was one of the few concrete signs that producers believe they can go on winning acceptance for higher prices in the short term. Due to the decline in zinc prices, however, extras on August shipments for certain grades of coated coil are understood to have declined. This means that transactions prices have remained the same, or have even fallen slightly, within the last month or so. Nevertheless, MBR has decided to leave its benchmark HDG prices unchanged for June. Spot market transactions prices for HDG remain in a range between roughly $1,400-1,500/tonne.
