European ferrochrome prices up sharply: Chrome/Molybdenum Highlights


Above all, is the fact that ferrochrome availability has tightened somewhat as well, with many of South Africa’s key smelters reducing output in the face of low prices.

In our monthly summary of activity in global chrome markets we often focus most of our attention on developments in the Chinese market. The market there is dominated by spot market trades rather than purchase on long-term contracts and so there are often more pronounced monthly movements in prices. The size of the market also demands attention.

But early 2020 sees China’s market running at a very staid pace. For sure, there is much reporting on the main story there in recent weeks, i.e. the viral outbreak that began in Wuhan during late 2019, and its effect on commodity markets.

With regard chrome in particular, prices are little changed since our last tracker. Imported charge chrome remains at $0.69/lb chrome contained (cif China), while UG2 ore imported from South Africa is also stable in price at $135/tonne...
