Will tightening steel margins put pressure on coking coal prices?: Coking Coal and Coke Market Analysis


The Fastmarkets premium hard coking coal (PHCC) index posted its first drop on a weekly average basis in sever week, sliding by $2.45 per tonne to $160 per tonne cfr Jingtang, China, in the week ended Friday February 7.

Price spread between domestic hot-rolled coil (HRC) in China and our estimate for hot metal production costs last week exhibited the sharpest drop since mid-May 2016, plunging to $153 per tonne, excluding VAT. The spread shrank by $29.5 per tonne week on week on the back of rapidly declining HRC prices.
