Japan and South Korea regional data focus: 10 February 2020


Market disruptions caused by the spread of the coronavirus pose risks for Japanese exporters. On one hand, a fall in raw materials and Chinese export prices created downside pressure on the seaborne steel price level.

Supply/Demand Fundamentals: Japanese crude steel output ticked up on a month-on-month basis in December to 7.78 million tonnes, but this was still an 8.0% annual fall. Demand from construction and automotive industries remained subdued, with annual falls in new construction starts and car output at the end of 2019.
