US stainless prices move up but will likely backtrack next month: American Highlights


As far as nickel, speculation is that in coming weeks it will be flat at best and could fall further, especially with the impact of the Indonesian ore ban already factored in.

US stainless steel prices follow alloy surcharges upwards
While the ferritic grades continue to see the biggest boost, US stainless steel prices will see across-the-board increases in February on the back of higher prices for most stainless raw materials, including a slight, 1% month-on-month recovery in nickel prices. We believe that this could be the peak, however. Not only have nickel prices been slipping over the past few weeks – particularly since fear about the coronavirus in China has started to push down many commodity prices – but it is expected that iron prices, which rose 11.1% over the past month, will start reversing course, possibly falling by as much as $10-20/long ton in February.
