Prices continue up, supply/demand fundamentals improving: European Market Highlights


Focusing on prices first of all, those on hot-dipped galvanized coil (HDG) are up by an average of almost €10/tonne since early December and now sit at just shy of €545/tonne ex-works.

Last year ended with Europe’s steel mills succeeding in their push for higher prices though only by enough to recoup rising raw material costs. That trend has continued into early 2020 with steel prices on flat products by and large tracking scrap prices upwards. A recent reversal in scrap prices presents European mills with their first test of the year though – can the recent uptick in steel prices be sustained as/should raw material costs fall?
