China loses the Iranian market: Asia Market Analysis


There has been a moderate uptick in pricing for API 5L seamless pipe We are hearing of lower volumes of discounted material available on the export market as higher raw material prices discourages marginal supply.

Chinese mills have lost sales to Iran over the last year with sanctions hitting their ability to sell, particularly if Chinese mills want to maintain access to other markets. The absence of foreign exchange is also an issue for Iranian buyers, who also lack creative ways of payments. China sold 40kt in 2017 of OCTG to Iran, when it accounted for 5% of seamless OCTG export volumes, but sales are likely to come in at less than 5kt for 2019. But this decline pales beside the decline in seamless linepipe volumes, where sales of 167kt in 2017 have dropped to less than 30kt in 2019.
