Falling upstream coil prices rule out large price rise for Asia’s tinplate exporters: Global tinplate market highlights


Order levels for tinplate in China have shown a seasonal rise, although slower growth has affected consumer incomes and is expected to result in restrained spending.

Faltering coil markets undermine Baowu price strategy Baowu’s notice to customers that it was adding a modest RMB100 per tonne ($14 per tonne) to its monthly contracted deliveries price for October reflected the group’s conviction that upstream coil prices had hit bottom. Further, a price recovery was possible as a result of anti-pollution constraints tightening supply during the coming months. After a successful effort to reduce, even eliminate, generous margins provided to favoured customers earlier in the year, to restore credibility to its price list, the group planned a run of real price rises as orders rose during the peak fourth quarter while its non-integrated rivals were squeezed by rising prices for bought-in HR coil.
