Chinese galvanizers prepare for winter losses as competition increases: Asian Market Highlights

Hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) as opposed to electro-galvanized (ELG) flat products remain the dominant export product from China, accounting for 74% of all Chinese metal coated flat products exports during the first eight months.

During the first eight months of this year, exports of metallic coated flat products from China, which include galvanized steel and tinplate amongst others, rose by 5% year-on-year to exceed 8.5 million tonnes (Mt). Exports of other flat-rolled products, by contrast, fell 2% at the same time to 18.4Mt. In our view, this is largely to do with domestic demand conditions, which have been firmer for substrates such as HRC than for coated products this year, dissuading those former suppliers from exporting. In both cases, average export prices slipped strongly during the period; coated by 10% and other flat-rolled exports by 19% and this is largely because of surplus supply conditions overseas, negatively impacted by depressed demand for flat-rolled steels.
