Behind the price rise is the rising cost of nickel, which is passed onto consumers via the alloy surcharge mechanism that producers in Europe and the USA utilize.

Prices rise but margins still under pressure
Following the large price increases seen in September for the most common, nickel-containing grades of stainless steel, October will see yet further sharp increases. In total, prices on grade 304 stainless steel will have jumped by almost $400/tonne since August, an increase of around 15%.
