Further price declines likely amid rising supply and declining demand: Silicon Metal Highlights


Some Chinese secondary aluminium alloy producers have suffered as a result of the increase in the US import tariff on Chinese aluminium wheels to 25% from 10% in June, diminishing demand for silicon metal.

Chinese silicon metal export prices have been unchanged for the past five weeks, on low transaction volumes. We expect a slow recovery from supply constraints on 553 grade silicon metal in Yunnan province from mid-June, with more refiners resuming operations in the province’s rainy season. Refiners are monitoring the market and are unlikely to return to normal operating levels rapidly, however, in expectation of price weakness in the near term. Silicon metal export prices from mainland China are at $1,440-1,510 per tonne fob.
