Chinese coaters export solution to local malaise is unlikely to last but demand should improve: Asian Market Highlights


Though sentiment indicators are not always reliable in China, purchasing manager surveys reveal a similar differential in patterns between the manufacturing and construction sectors.

As the charts show below, mill shipments of tinplate, “plated sheet/strip”, otherwise known as metallic coated coil, and “prepainted plate/strip” (organic coated coil) are all in decline within the Chinese domestic market. Galvanized coil, which is by far the largest part of metallic coated coil sales among CISA-member mills are performing better but after four months are still 1% lower than a year ago. By contrast, shipments of long products, such as bars and large sections (heavy sections such as beams/columns), and hot-rolled plates/sheets are rising very strongly. This suggests that the construction market continues to pull demand for Chinese steel but broader, often higher-value manufacturing applications are in turmoil.
