European prices recover as supply tightens: European Market Highlights
We mentioned back in our March issue that the import quotas for auto-grade HDG would almost certainly be exhausted during the period through to end June 2019.
As prices of coated steels elsewhere continue to fall, at last those in Europe have been able to register month-on-month gains. Any improved sentiment is being tempered, however, by the fact that prices have in fact retreated slightly since an uptick during early June.
The monthly increase amounts to some 10/tonne, with average prices of hot-dipped galvanized coil (HDG) in the region rising from 565/tonne as of publication of our previous tracker to just under 575/tonne as of writing. As mentioned, however, prices had risen by more during early June when they reached almost 580/tonne on average.
Almost all of the strengthening in prices has come in southern European markets and in our opinion that can be explained by a short-term tightening in the availability of imports.
