Trade conflicts suggests price weakness set to continue: European Market Highlights


The decline in global prices for coated steels and the extent of that decline is generally evenly spread, reflecting a worsening macroeconomic backdrop for most countries caused above all by a ratcheting-up of trade tensions between China and the USA in recent weeks.

Europe’s steelmakers no longer suffer falling prices alone. After seeing prices achieved by their counterparts in Asia and America rise last month while those in Europe continued their retreat, recent weeks have seen steelmakers around the world ensnared by falling prices.

The decline in global prices for coated steels and the extent of that decline is generally evenly spread, reflecting a worsening macroeconomic backdrop for most countries caused above all by a ratcheting-up of trade tensions between China and the USA in recent weeks. Most steelmakers have seen their prices for hot-dipped galvanized steel (HDG) fall by some €15-25/tonne this month (see Americas and Asia highlight sections for more details).
