Prices continue to rise but steelmakers struggle to improve margins: European Highlights

The good news for European buyers of stainless steel is that nickel prices have stabilized in recent weeks.

With stainless steel raw material costs rising over the past couple of months, so too have prices of finished stainless steel. We reported last month that alloy surcharges on the most common grade of stainless steel, 304, were set to rise by some €125/tonne in March. We now know that those surcharges will rise by a further ~€80/tonne in April. With quarterly ferrochrome contract prices recently being settled some 7% higher for Q2 over Q1 levels, and with nickel prices potentially set to rally further, just how much higher can alloy surcharges, and stainless steel prices, go?
