HBI output and sale volumes continued to grow in 2018, but prices are likely to be supported by lower energy costs this year: Iron Metallics Market Analysis

The amount of discount for HBI to obsolete ferrous scrap and to merchant pig iron (MPI) correlates with HBI supply volumes, as well as with gas prices.

Volumes of hot-briquetted iron (HBI) exported by major global exporters picked up by 6% last year, according to our preliminary estimations based on data from the International Steel Statistics Bureau (ISSB). As a result, the combined exports exceeded 8 million tonnes per year in 2018. This followed a 28% year-on-year jump in 2017 after an 8% decline in 2016, as the first chart alongside shows.
